Why Do We Need Supplements?

There are so many reasons we need vitamin and mineral supplementation, in addition to a healthy diet. Most modern diets unfortunately include an increased consumption of processed foods like pizza, fried chips, breads and burgers (foods that are basically devoid of any nutrients) making it essential to supplement with vitamins, minerals, and omega IIIs.

Furthermore, stress, caffeinated products (such as coffee, tea, carbonated drinks), smoke exposure, pollution and alcohol all can decrease the absorption of certain nutrients or create an increased demand for certain nutrients.

For example, hydrazine residues, found in fungicides used by farmers, increase our body’s need for vitamin B6. The nutrient level in food is determined by the quality of the soil in which the food grows. Over the past 50 years our foods have been decreasing in nutrients. This is caused by the chemicals and fertilizers used, lack of crop rotation, harvesting times (usually before ripened, further decreasing nutrient content), and transit times to the grocery shelves. Even our cooking methods reduce the nutrient levels in food (by heating).

Bread was once prepared with only wheat, water, butter, and baker's yeast. Unless you bake this from scratch at home you are getting the store bought variety which can contain ingredients such as preservatives, coloring agents, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and chemical residues from various packaging and cleaning procedures. These unnatural ingredients can decrease digestion, create food allergies, increase your body’s need for certain vitamin and minerals, and create a build-up of toxins.

Therefore, it is important to make healthy food choices, exercise, and supplement additional vitamin and minerals for overall health.
